You can try the same steps to change your life. All you need are your favorite movies and the desire to succeed. Heres how: 1. Identify three top qualities you love in a movie character. Why do you love a movie character? Is it only because of the looks or because of certain qualities this character portrays in movies? This step asks you to identify these character qualities, name them, and write them down. Make a list of the three most important qualities. This is how my client Tracy applied this step to win her weight-loss battle. Tracy had a fixation on Julia Roberts because of the actors thin looks. But after I asked Tracy a few questions, she realized that she liked Julia Roberts because the characters she portrays in movies show remarkable qualities that Tracy desired for herself. In Erin Brockovich, Julia Roberts character shows determination and patience. In Mona Lisa Smile, she shows loyalty to her values and courage. In Runaway Bride she corrects her self-sabotaging patterns with men. And in Notting Hill she follows her heart. Tracys list of three top qualities was: loyalty to her values, patience and courage. 2. Identify your most present problem life area. Is it money, your love life, lack of self-motivation, difficulties with your kids? Pick the problem area that is the most present. Now, go to your list of three qualities. You will discover that you are not applying at least two of them. If you do, your problem area will improve quickly. In this step, Tracy discovered that her most present problem area wasnt her weight, but communication with her boyfriend. She also realized that she wasnt applying all three qualities on her list. She didnt show loyalty to her values or patience with her shortcomings, or courage to follow through with her decisions. 3. Choose one quality and apply it through actions. From your list, pick one quality that you know you can practice with success. Write down one thing you can do to practice this quality with your family, friends, and coworkers. Be consistent and practice this new behavior for a weekby then, youll see results. Tracy chose loyalty to her values and decided to practice it by sticking to her choices and not giving into her boyfriends opinions. She chose to say This is how I like it, every time her boyfriend pushed her to agree with his ways. 4. Ask your favorite movie character for help. There will be times when youll experience drawback, get impatient, or need encouragement to stay focused. Dont despair. Take a break from practice and watch your favorite movie. Afterwards, have a private, imaginary dialogue with your favorite movie character, like youd do with a dear friend. Ask for help, advice and support. Note the answers you get. Tracy learned how to talk to Julia Roberts and find the strength to stay firm in her beliefs. She practiced those imaginary dialogues a few times, until she realized that she no longer needed Julias help. Now she could say This is how I like it and mean it. 5. Move on to the next quality. Be persistent and you will soon begin to see significant changes. Dont stop there. Success builds on itself. Once you have internalized the first quality of your favorite movie character, move onto the next. Practice it for some time and enjoy more improvements in your life. You can do it! After Tracy proved that she could stay loyal to her values, she moved on to practicing patience. Within days, she noticed a difference in her attitude. She stopped obsessing about her weight and felt more self-confident, relaxed and hopeful. Her body responded: the weight started coming off. I thought you were kidding about me watching Julia Roberts movies to lose weight, she told me smiling, in our last session. A complete knowledge of your cameras features will help you to get the most out of your equipment and produce a more professional looking final product. 2. Charge your batteries in advance, one to record the action and a back-up battery as well. Theres nothing worse than being out of juice when the party action starts! 3. Do a sound and video check before filming the actual party activities. Check for distracting noise which could ruin the quality of your video, such as air conditioners, fans, televisions and radios. (The noise of your kids party will be quite enough!) Shoot a minute or so of film, rewind and view it to be sure the camera is operating efficiently. 4. Lighting is key to an attractive and viewable video. When taking the shot, be sure that the major light source is behind you. If the light is behind the subject, s/he will be shadowed. Position yourself and your camera between the light source and the subject. If there is a large window in your party area, pull the shades or curtains to block out background light. You can also keep bright backlighting out of the picture by keeping the camera zoomed in on your subject. You might also activate the “back light button”, if your camera has one, to lessen the window glare. COMPOSITION: 5. Compose by using the zoom feature, before you start rolling tape. Set the buttons where they need to be in advance, so you have only to flick the “on” switch to be ready to videotape. 6. Follow the rule of thirds. Dont place the most important picture element in the center of the screen. Position the camera so the center of attention is in the top or lower third of the viewfinder. Be sure to keep the tops of peoples heads near the top of the viewfinder. 7. Keep the background simple to minimize visual distractions. Avoid shadows and other objects that may appear to “grow out of peoples heads”. FILMING: 8. Begin your video by stating the birthday event and date. Continue narration as the video progresses; interviewing guests and talking about the party games, food and other party topics will make a more interesting video. 9. Make sure to hold the camera steady while filming. Hold your elbows close to your body and avoid walking around. Imagine your camcorder is a full cup of coffee you dont want to spill and move accordingly. 10. Keep your average shot length at approximately 10 seconds. This means keeping the shot steady without panning or zooming for a count of ten. Count quietly to yourself as a reminder, until you refine your technique. Similarly, when you do pan or zoom, do so slowly to avoid the videocamera going out of focus. 11. Set up the videocamera on a tripod to record ongoing events when party action is set in one location, such as at the party table for cake and ice cream, or when guests are gathered together for the opening of gifts. This technique gives the viewer the perspective of being a “fly on the wall” with a panoramic view of all the party events. 12. Capture candid moments by being inconspicuous in your filming. Small “snapshots” of unposed moments the best video memories. Let shaky videos and shaken confidence become a thing of the past.
